INDIAN RIOTS,
ENGLISH CLUB WRECKED
DOCTOR AND MAGISTRATE INJURED.
SIMLA, June 2. A typical anti-European riot occurred on Friday night at Coconada, near Rajahmundri (Province of Madras), where a disturbance, was recently followed by a visit from that dangerous agitator, Bepin Chuidra Pal. r
It appears that the disorder began by a native student molesting a civil surgeon in the street and shouting "Bande matarant," The civil surgeon thrashed the student.
A mob /afterwards collected and attacked and wrecked the club where the civil surgeon was -dining with three other Europeans. The European magistrate hearing a: noise collected a Handful of native police,. and with their help effected^ rescue, but both the doctor and the magistrate were damaged in the scrimmage the former so seriously that he has been carried to Madras for treatment. •Fifty additional police have been drafted into Cocohada from Rajahmundri; and the city is now quiet. It appears; that Friday's outbreak was the culmination of student disorder,, which has been'simmering 'since Bepin Chandra Pal's visit to the neighborhood. 'l'he native municipal chairman, having been among those so ag*grassively._olest. ed, the other day did exaotly what • the civil surgeon did pri Friday, and thrashed one oi ma tormentors. More inflammatory leaflets have also been seized at Faridpur. They were intended to- incite the. Mahommedans. to attack ; the Hindus. At Dibrugarh • (Assam) the European cemetery has been broken into bv studenta, who smashed the tombstones as a sign of enmity to Europeans. •/; ;■ • • ' : '■;■;■ •*'*■• : /,. All these incidents are exceedingly petty, but, taken collectively, indicate a continuance of the seditious moveirient, which is likely to have more serious development. ______^_______ *
