CHEAPER CABLE RATES.
j. ♦ (Press Assn. — By Telegraph. — Copyright.) I (Received May 7, 10.36 a.m.) 1 MELBOURNE, May 7. ! Tlie Postmaster-General is now making an investigation into the cable rates with a. view to ascertaining the possible effect of a reduction. Personally, he would like to see Sir Joseph Ward's: suggestion that . the rates come down to a shilling a word 1 adopted. Enquiries, however, convinced j him that so heavy a decrease .would be ,j impracticable. He sees no reason why a 1 reduction should not be made to 2s or 2s 6d if the other partners to trie Pacifio j cable and the owners of the Canadian land line and cable company will agree. Lately he has been considering a proposal for transmitting free press cable news. The idea strikes him as commendable, but it ' will be necessary to secure the co-opera- ! tion of other parties to the service h*v ; fore it could be adopted. Another diffii culty would be the loss on terminal charges, from whicli a substantial revenue is now derived. I ' =
