AMATEUR "RAFFLES" ESCAPADE.
NEW YORE, March 17. The adventures of Raffles, the amateur cracksman, excited the emulation of Mr. Richard O. Hoopes, a student arid the son of a wealthy barrister of Kokoma, Indiana. Mr Hoo-jes varied his studies of phy .hology i i l ake For .•_)[- Co^oge by induTg ; ng m ihe perusiil "of "Slu-riock Hi .m.." "und "The Iron Mask."
Gazing at the beautiful country houses m the vicinity of the college, the idea struck him that he could equal, if not excel, Raffles. Accordingly lie broke college after midnight not lorig ago, and, armed with a complete set of Durglarv tools, entered the marision of Mr Chatfield Taylor. He came away >yith a whole satchel full of jewellery. " * But when he bought the newspapers next day he was intensely disappointed to find that they contained no account of the robbery. A week later the imitator of Raffles "cracked" the residence of Mr. McGarin, and cleared thousands of dollars' worth of diamonds. Again the newspapers kept silence on the subject of his feats. So mortified was Mr. Hobpes tliat he penned a note to the police, but on second thoughts destroyed it. Paying no need of money he made no attempt to dispose of his loot until yesterday, when he offered a pawnbroker a £100 ring for £20. The pawnbroker, who liad a description of the missirig gems, telephoned to the police, and the college Raffles was promptly arrested.
