It is_ somewhat ' remarkable (says yesterday'- New Zealand Times) that whenever "the Admiral of the Australasian squadron visits Wellington the weather is almost invariably on its worst behaviour. Since Sir Wilmot Favvkes arrived on tho present occasion, it has rained almost incessantly, as it did a twelvemonth ago when the squ-ulron was m port. It was a calm grey morning when the flagship (.teamed into the harbor on Tuesday-morn-ing, but that afternoon "it came up" from the south. Since then rain, or Scotch mist, has made tlie fighting * ships mere shadows of themselves, and as a necessary consequence .shoregoing hai? not liad the attractions for Jack tliat it has m fine weather. -A former resident of Napier now at British Columbia writes to a friend *. "We have just passed tlnoiigh the most severe winter, known m Canada for 20 years. I sincerely hope I may never experience an-* other like it. The cold here is not to be compared with what they have m Manitoba and the prairie- country. In addition to the intense cold they had a fuel famine to add to tlieir. misery. In several cases whole families were frozen to death in -'tlieir hovses after burning every stick of furniture, and m one case even taking* up some of the flooring to burn. Here m British Columbia, which is sometimes called the California of Canada, we had the glass below zero all tlirough the month of January, frequently 20 degrees below, and one night it was 35 degrees below zero. For six weeks we had to get up three 'or four times m. tk^joiffht to add firing to the stoves,' or-eferytliing would have been frozen. We have had five long month., of deep snow and it will be two or three weeks before it can possibly all go and before we can resume our gar-' dening." i ________________*
