The thermometer readings at 9 a.m. this day were : — Auckland... 64 Westport ... 56 ,Gisborne ... 61 Qreymouth ... 69 Napier ... 60 Bealey (2140ft) 47 N. -tfymouth 63 Christchurch... 54 Wanganui... 60 Timaru .... 64 Wellington 55 Oamaru m ... 55 Blenheim ... 60 Dunedin ... 54 Nelson ... 61 Invercargill ... 50 Captain Edwin forecasted at 9 a.m. to-day: "South-easterly heavy gale, glass rise, tides very high, sea very heavy, rain probably heavy and much colder weather, rivers in high flood." East Cape reported this marning : Light southerly wind, rain, and heavy sea. Southerly, south-east and south-west "winds and cloudy weather prevailed today. Rain was almost general in the North Island and at Christchurch. Heavy seas were reported at Napier, Wanganui, Kaikoura, Timaru, Port Chalmers, and in Cook's Straits.
