A FINE PANORAMA.

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day.

! Whilst at Tauranpi yesterday the Hon. Mr Millar visited Mount -Maunganui, a bold headland at the mouth of the harbor, i rising to a height of 900 feet from tlie water. It bears a forbidding aspect, its sides consisting of precipitous basaltic barriers, rising vertically for a hupdred feet. This hill, a famous pa, was the scene of a sanguinary encounter in the olden days when the Ngapuhis, who came from the Bay of Islands in their canoes, after offering gifts to the owners, the Ngaiterangi, treacherously fell upon them and 6lew them in hundreds, only one mau escaping by swimming across the harbor. From the summit a magnificent view of the surrounding country was obtained, from Katikati and Ta hua on the other side, to Whakatane county on Uie other, with the Mamaku ranges forming a-back-ground on tlie landward side. To the north a perfect seascape was formed by the great expanse of the Bay of Plenty, sleeping calmly in the bright sunlight, and dotted with its groups of islands. The Shoe and Slipper, tlie Alderman, Mayor Island, Motiti (one of the most fertile spots in the colony), White Island (its exact antithesis) Place Island, and away in tlie dim distance Whale Island-. • The Minister, who was the first to climb the mount, was delighted with the view, and was enabled to gauge the extent of country available for settlement, and the area that will be tapped by the Bast Coast railway when completed.
