EX- ARMY MAN SENTENCED TO
DEATH
At Warwick Assizes, Edwin Jamvs Moore (33) ; laborer, formerly m the, Army, was indicted for the wilful murder of his mother, Fanny Adelaide Moore, wife of a cabman, at Leamington, on March 2nd, by Betting her on fire. The prisoner's hands were swathed m bandages from burns received at the time of his mother's death. The Court was crowded. Counsel for the prosecution said the woman was terribly burned. The chief witness was prisoner's brother, Bertie Moore, aged eleven, who said the accused came home under the influence of drink. He complained that his supper, consisting of herrings, had been scorched. He had words with It's mother, and then picked up a lighted oil lamp, which he hurled at her.-- Jt missed her. and crashed against the wall The lighted wick fell on the floor, and prisoner lighted the evening paper from it. He then took a lighted spill and set fire to his mother's blouse. It blazed up, and Bhe rushed. irito the, scullery to reach the water tap to put out the flames. Cries of murder brought u' e neighbors to her assistance, but she s.> Vk exhausted, and died m- the, backyaru. A witness named Clark admitted- that she found the prisoner battling with the flarhes, which enveloped his mother, and his hands were badly burnt. The prisoner was found guilty, and: sentenced to death, no hope being held orit of mercy.
