..•'■— — ♦ — ; — - The householders' meeting was held m the Rakauroa schoolroom on Monday night. Mr J. McPhee . occupied the chair. Messrs J. McPhee, J. Redpath, H. J. Beaufoy, W. Clark, and W. Graham were elected to the new committal. Mr McPhee and Mr Beaufoy were reelected to the positions of chairman arid secretary respectively. Opportunity of the gathering of setlers Was taken to hold meetings of the library subscribers; ratepayers, .and the Farmers' Union Hhe same evening. '■''"■■ ■'■ , i Mr F. Shaw occupied the chair at the library subscribers' meeting. The balance sheet, showing a balance m hand of £8 7s 6d was - read 'and adopted, mrs Beaufoy and Messrs J. Hutchinson, Redpath, W. . Clark, and F. Sha,w were reelected v a. committee. Mr F. Shaw vi&i re-elected chairman. It was decided to sell off a number of old books. , The ratepayers elected Mr J. Redpath to the chair. The chief object of the meeting was to discuss the position of the Waihuka road. ' Settlers are anxious to have access to the railway by this road m time for next summer's traffic, Mr T. E. Burgess, secretary to the Farmers' Union, stated that about three miles would, remain after Malone's contract is completed. Twelve months ago the County Engineer estimated a sum of £700 would be required m addition ro the loan and Government grant. From j previous experience he considered it impossible to raise this, sum and. have the road completed* by next summer. He moved that the County Council be asked to make a connection* between the new road and the Ngatapa road, a distance of some thirty chains. Mr W. Graham seconded. Messrs Hutfhinson, McLean, and Shaw also spoke m favor of the connection. — Mr H. Beaufoy was against the proposal on the ground that it would be more- difficult to get the road completed if the road were joined. He favored endeavoring to get the whole road com-pleU-'d. Messrs tirncc, McSaveny, McKen- ! zie, and Riddiek spoke supporting Mr Beaufoy. — On Mr Burgess's motion heing put, it was carried on the casting vote of the chairman, there being nine for and nine against the proposal. — Mr Beaufoy moved, and Mr Clark seconded, that the County Engineer be asked for an estimate of what further sum v ill be required to complete the road, on receipt of which, the chairman to call another meeting to take steps to get the road completed.— Mr Beaufoy called tbe attention of the meeting to the fact that there, is only one Justice of the Peace m the district, and settlers are often caused inconvenience through his absence. It was unanimously decided io request the Minister for Justice to ar>--point Mr H. lliddick a Justice of the Peace.— A vote of thanks to the chair brought the meeting to a close. The annual general meeting of the Rakauroa branch of the Farmers' Union was then hold. Mr Redpath m the chair. The balance sheet showing a credit of £2 17s was read and adopted. The following officers were elected :— President, Mr J. Redpath, vice-presid-ent, Mr J. Hutchinson; provincial deicfite, Mr Hutchinson; secretary, Mr H. •- Burgess*. Correspondence was read from the Postmaster-General to the effect that th£ request for telephono stations at Rakauroa and Matawai would receive attention when the line to Motu is made. On the motion of Mr Hutchinson, it was left to the president and secretary to call meetings as required. Votes of thanks to the president and secretary brought 1 the meeting to an end.
