LOST-A MILLIONAIRE.
"LUMBER KING" DISAPPEARS
NEW YORK, March 11. Mr Frederick Weyerhauser, the millionaire "lumber king" whose wealth is estimated at £200,000,000, has disappeared mysteriously m California. Telegrams from Los Angles state that the missing millionaire, who is seventythree years , old, was recognised at San Francisco on Friday. He left there on Friday everi-ng and went to Santa Barbara, a seaside resort m Southern California. Here "all trace of him has been lost. 'His disappearance has created a sensation throughout the Pacific. States, and it -is feared that he has been kidnapped and held for ransom. Mr Weyerhauser's great health has made him tlie object of several attacks by brigands during his many years' residence m the Western States. About ten years ago three men attempted to kidnap him near Spokane, Washington. Notices 'anriouncing his- disappearance hay_ been posted m all the leading hotels m th_. Western. States, while the ; Southern Pacific ' Railway officials have sent out a' general warning to all guards, car porters, and conductors to keep a look-out for the missing man. Tlie mystery is increased by the fact that when last seen, Mr Weyerhauser was unaccompanied by his confidential agent, Mr. ' McCormick, who usually goes with jliiin everywhere. /"Mr Weyerhauser, who was born m Ger. Hriany, went to America when a young man. After working as a 'railway labourer he finally igaved, enough money to buy a sawmill. Thereafter he steadily bought limber and sold it at a profit. For years he reigried undisputed m the lumber regions of Wisconsin, Minnebta,' and the Upper Mississippi river. At least 30,000,000 acres of timber land are under his control, an area nearly equal to the size of England. .' ''.-.'
