NEW YORK THIEF SEIZES A CAR TO ESCAPE THE POLICE. NEW YORK, March 10. An electric tram, crowded with passengers, was seized yesterday m Forty-sec-ond street by John Karstendick, a runaway thief, m the hope of escaping capture by the police. Karstendick, who was being chased by an excited crowd of police and pedestrians, jumped on the car, swept aside the conductor, tumbled the motorman overboard', and started the car at full speed. Several passengers tried to interfere, but were beaten off with Che controller handle by Karstendick. Several men jumped off into the snow, and the women passengers screamed. Suddenly the car was brought to a violent halt, crashing into a snow-cart The pasengers were thrown m a heap on the floor, aud Karstendick was hurled from the motorman's platform to the pavement.
Though severely hurt, Karstendick made a desperate effort to escape. He was captured by three policeman after a hard fight.
