PRIESTS AND POLICE FIRE AT BURGLARS.

NEW YORK, March 10.

Father Otterbein, rector of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the largest and richest Roman Catholic church m the borough of Bronx, New York, aroused by a burglar alarm, awakened two assistants and entered the church quietly at 1.30 on Saturday morning, one of the assistants first" blowing a whistle outside to summon te police. The three clergymen found two burglars, who had heaped up the gold altarservice plate and had been stopped by a combination lock from entering the tabernacle. The burglars shot at the priests, who returned the fire, the sharp report of firearms echoing along the lofty walls." Three policemen soon arrived and joined m the shooting. Realising that they were outnumbered the burglars fled througli a window at the back of. the altar leaving the booty behind. No one was wounded.
