THE A.M.P. SOCIETY.

The progressivencss of the Gisborne district, and. the -increase -.in the volume of the Society's business here, has decided the principal Board m Sydney, on the recommendation 'of the New Zealand local Bdard'in Wellington, to open a district office m Gisbonie, iv charge of a trained officer of the Society. Hitherto the Society's business has been most satisfactorily conducted by Messrs Dalgety and Company, but the time has arrived when it is considered advisable m the interest of the Society to make* a change. Mr J. C. E. Kissling, an officer of the Society, who has occupied the position of chief clerk m the Society's office m Auckland, has been appointed lo the position of District Secretary m Gisborne. Mr E. W. Lowe, the Resident Secretary of the Society m New Zealand, has been m Gisbomo securing an office, aud making urrangcinnts for the opening of the diftrict office on May Ist. The Society lias secured accommodation on the first floor of the Union Bank, Gladstone road, a front room, so that it opens m one of the best positions m town. In July 1871, when the Society opened its branch m Wellington, it had a local agency m Gisborne, and the' business amounted to 15 policies assuring £3760, with an annual income of £123 18s. The new district office will bo opened with 518 policies* on its register assuring £178,000, producing an annual income 0 f £5292 6s 3d. The Society is also deeply interested m the district m other ways, having loans on mortgage to the extent of £126,650 and a loan to the Borough Council of £75.000 for its water supply, making m all £201,650, so this indicates the faith tlie directors of the Society have m Gisborne district. The Society may, of course, be regarded as part and parcel of New Zealand, judging from the enormous interests it has m tho colony. When the branch was established at Wellington on May 1, 1871, it opened with a total income throughout New Zealand of £17,189 per annum and assets £1000. To-day it has an annual income of over £500^000 (half a million) and assets on the branch books of £4,---141,979. This shows its wonderful progress and.the. faith the people of the colony have m the Society. We wish' the new' departure .of the society every success, and that- it will prove advantageous to all concerned.
