AN ACTOR'S INCOME.
Mr H. W. Lucy writes to the Sydney Morning Herald: — Sir Henry Irving, after his tour m the provinces, has been spending a week m London, whoiv, having no engagemeut, he lias enjoyed the rare luxury of going out to dinner on other nights besides Sunday. He has now Lft for a period 1 of rest at the seaside m company with his son Heiuy. Talking about his career at the Lyceum Theatre, he told me that since it opened the books of the theatre showed' a net revenue of two and a-half million sterling. Out of that splendid result living's maximum share was £10,000 a year. As is well known, when he went on tour m the United States he, m accordance with an undertaking voluntarily entered upon, paid' a percentage of his large earnings to the Lyceum Company. He has not entered upon any definite engagements for the two years he still proposes to remain m harness. It is, however, pretty certain that he will make at least one return visit to the United States, and is sorely tempted to go to Australia, where he is assured) of aiv enthusiastic welcome. Meanwhile he has just received a notable proposal nearer home. Mr Beerbohm Tree has submitted to him princely terms for a three months' engagement to be played 1 at His Majesty's Theatre. London playgoers will be struck with tho idea of Beerbohm Tree being m a position to offer Henry Irving an engagement worthy his consideration. Time was, not long ago. when positions were reversed. lam not sure from wluit point of view the situation strikes Irving. But he has declined the overture.
