JUSTICES OF PEACE.
QUESTION OE_ PAYMENT.
"As Justices of the Peace are to do the work of coroners the Coroners Bill 'should make provision for paying them." — This was the burden of the Hon. W. C. Smith's warble to the Legislative Council the other afternoon.
The Attorney-General, m reply, held out a hope that the Bill wouldl be amended to provide for paying the jay-pay for work m his new office. Such an amendment could not be- introduced m the Council, but a momber of the Lower House intended! to move m that direction M-hen the Bill appeared there. At the same lime the Attorney-General pointed out that Justices of the Peace are not paid for sitting m the Magistrate's Court. Apparently jay-pays m the courthouse and jrfy-pays m the morgue are two different "pussons." The Hon. J. E. Jenkinson is of the opinion that' "a large number of Justices of the Peace are not competent either to sit on the Bench or to sit anywhere else. '
