LAST NIGHT'S NEW ZEALAND NEWS.
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Watkin Mills concluded his Wellington season to-night with a recital of "The Messiah." The famous English basso had the assistance of the Wellington Musical Union-. . A very large audience, including Lord and Lady Plunket, made an enthusiastic demonstration after Mr MiLls' delivery of "Why Do the Nations?" WESTPORT, last night. Last night's lightning struck and set fire to tlie Lyell telegraph office. The! instruments were smashed to pieces, and the office wrecked. One side of the office was considerably damaged, and the chimney damaged. Mr Porter, the postmaster, rode to Reefton to report, and returned with fresh instruments. All telegraphic communication with tlie other parts of the colony off the coast lias been severed since lost night.
