CUNARD LINERS.

LARGEST AND FASTEST AFLOAT. li!lectrlo Telegraph - Copyright— United Presß Association (Received July 23, 8.46 a.m.) y LONDON, July 22. It is reported that the Government have arranged to pay the Cunard Company over a million pounds to build two steamers, the largest and fastest afloat, for use with the rest of their fleet as armed cruisers, also for an improved - postal service across the Atlantic.

Much time lias been spent m the evolution of the design of the new Cunard liners. The model experiments have all been m the direction of increasing the beam. In the original plan a breadth of about 78ft was suggested, but with a length of 770 ft the width has been increased. The displacement will be about 35,000 tons. On the trial trip it is expected that a speed approaching twenty-six knots will be attained with slightly less than 70,000 indicated horse power, while on an Atlantic run twentyfive knots will be maintained with 65,000 indicated horse power. Should these speed anticipations be realised the vessels will exceed by nearly two knots per hour the fastest liners afloat. In other respects also the two hew vessels will surpass all others — m length, for instance, by 60ft, m breadth by 10ft, m displacement by some 5,000 tons, and m indicated horse power by 23,000.
