AUCKLAND, thia day The Star's Tonga correspondent writes : The rumor re annexation of Tonga is unfounded, and all here sincerely hope our peaceable natives will be left alone. Merchants m the group are perfectly satisfied with the administration and existing laws. On June 3 the British flag was hoisted at Tonga flagstaff and saluted as an apology to Mr Hunter, British Consul agent, who accused the Government of treating him m an insulting manner on the occasion of the visit of- Governor Jackson, who was not allowed to land m consequence of measles at Fiji, the previous port of call. It appears tliat Hunter was stopped by a sentry when he went ashore to get an audience with the King. The Consul complained to the High Commissioner of the conduct of the sentry, and requested the King to salute the British flag as an apology. The nobles and chiefs were grieved at the construction put upon the occurrence. The indebtedness of the Tongan Government outside the kingdom is £160. (Received July 23, 9.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 23. News by- the steamer Stettin reports that a severe earthquake was felt at Matupi, New Britain, just before she left on the 13th. There are no details as to damage.
