♦ (Per Press association.) GREYTOWN N., last night. Capital weather prevailed throughout the whole day. The attendance was estimated at 1000. The wicket was not playing well m the morning, but improved considerably as play progressed. Contrary to expectations, the local twentytwo made a brilliant stand, especially the tail end. Leatbam then came on, and proved 'disastrous, causing the retirement of Bachey (1), Laurenson (1), Ogier (3), F. Hawke (0), Galwey (3), Ticehurst (3), Keys (0) ; but when Judd was 26 he' was caught by BoHiinquet. Logan and Cundy hit out'vigorously, and soon knocked up 17 before the union was interfered with by Hargreayes, Logan retiring with 10 to his credit. Frith joined Cundy, but. was run out, 0. Madsen replaced Renall, and the field were given some racing about, the! latter hitting out with great confidence arid vigor, his score being 44 before being caught by Stanning. It included four fourers and four threes. Swan carried his bat for 19. The first innings concluded for the respectable total of 205. Hargi'eaves took 12 wickets for 51 runs, Thompson four for 55, Bosanquet one for 21, and Burnup three for 56. The Englishmen commenced their essay at 4 o'clock, Warner and Whatman going to the wicket first. Wairarnpa fielded 18. These two batsmen dealt severely with the home bowling. In the fourth over, Ogier mulled the ball when he should easily have stumped Warner. The score was carried to 64, when Whatman was dismissed Ibw. His effort produced 46. Williams replaced him, but was retired when he had scored 7. Burnup had a fairly long life, carrying the total to 97, when Warner was run out.His effort was responsible for 24. Dowson was next m. Frith accepted a catch from Burnup when the score was 122. Veiy slow cricket was now witnessed until the day's play ceased. Staiming filled the vacancy till 171 appeared on the board. Bosanquet came next. He knocked up two, when he was run out. Leatham joined Dowson, and these- two were both hi when stumps were drawn for the day. The individual scores were: Warner"24. Whatman 46. Williams 7, Burnup 34, Stanning 14, Bosanquet 2, Dowson (not out) 52, Leathain 3, extras 9 ; total, 185 for six wickets.
