Before the Nelson Magistrate last week, a boy of eleven veal's named Aiihur Jolui llaydon was charged with having unlawfully solicited subscriptions on behalf of the Salvation Army at Nelson withont being authorised. The sum of threepence was given to the lad by a Chinaman, and the charge arose out of this case. The accused pleaded guilty. Sergeant Dougan said that the accused— apparently the ringleader— with several other boys went round with subscription lists fo» school picnics, Salvation Army, etc., the money raised .being divided among the boys and spent. The Magistrate said he was disposed to send the accused to the industrial school, as the boy might become a distinct criminal.
