♦— - (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last' night. Though rain fell m tlie niglit, it did not matei-ially injure the wicket except at one end, where it crumbled a little, and after the Englishmen were disposed of for 289 the Wellington players were expected, after their batting on Thursday, to make a draw of it. They began fairly well, with four wickets down for 81, but after lunch Thompson found a "spot," anrd whenever he hit it it seemed to take a wicket. Mahoney played a capital innnings, but could find no one to stay with Turn, and all were out for 140, leaving the Englishmen only 95 to get, with 2£ hours to go. These runs were hit off by Warner and Bumup. In the first over, however, the latter should have been caught with his total at 17, but was badly missed, and though Warner gave a possible chance, which was lost by Mahoney slipping, nothing else could be urged against them. Bumup played a masterful innings, and did some hard, clean hitting, two of his drives landing over the ropes for six each. In England's first innings Thompson carried his bat for 48,' which with his bowling to-day was well up to liis reputation of a sound all-round player. In the second innings Warner was 'not out for 43, and Burnup not out for 50 ; extras 4. making 97, or two more than required! For Wellington, Mahoney was top scorer, with 40 (not out), Gore' 23, Hickson 20, Kiohiirdson 19. Tlks best bowling by Wellington was bnham four for 57. Against Wellington lhompwn took 7 for 51, Hargreaves 1 for 46, and Bosanquet 1 for 24. The weather was fine, and there was another large gate, the total attendance being a record. Tho takings amount to some £650, which is expected to give, a profit of over £300 to the loca.l Association.
