"THE DARLING OF THE GODS."
NOTABLE PLAY -MOUNTING IN • NEW YORK. < ' NEW YORK, Dec. 4.^ A wonderful Japanese drama by*lessrs ( Belasco and Long, entitled "The Darling 1 i of the Gods," was produced at Belasco's Theatre last night. It is the most gorgeous stage spectacle ever witnessed m America. There are ten scenes magnificently mounted and full of dazzling effects. The play is founded on a tragic love story of J old Japan, and the leading role is tilled by , Miss Blanche Bates. ■ \ It is accompanied by wierd incidental • music, m which antique Japanese instruments largely figure. Realism is further enhanced by the burning of incense, which^ disseminates drowsy odors tliroughout the* theatre. Tlie critics pronounce the production ) marvellous, and confess themselves unable j to find language to adequately describe the performance, hi which nearly all tlie t ( senses are successfully appealed to. .
