♦ (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. The Wellington men were disposed of this morning for 243, Waters remaining not out with 17. Hales 15. Seven of the runs scored to-day were byes. Scarcely had the men withdrawn when the weather, which had been threatening, broke m a sharp shower, and caused play to be postponed until after lunch. The rain did not hurt the pitch, but made the grass greasy, and put the bowlers at some disadvantage. The Englishmen made a good start, for Wanier and Burnup put up 42 before the former was bowled for 16, i and with Fane, the Kentish man, did still better. The score was carried to 106, Burnup doing the lion's share of the hitting, and Fane contenting himself with singles. Holdswoith was then, put on, and off the second ball Burnup was finely stumped for a chanceless innings of 69. After he left Fane changed his style, and hit well and often. Taylor foliowed suit, and 150 was brought up for two hours' play ; 18 were hit m three .overs from Stephenson, and 35 runs were put on m 20 minutes. Taylor was then caught at short leg for 35, with the total at 172. The fielding up to this bore comparison with the Englishmen's ; but with his score at 57, Fane was missed twice m successive overs, and had made himself top scorer when Upham, who had been bowling with success, came cai again, and hit his off stump ,at 213, of which Fane claimed 70. Bosanquet made 12, but Dowson, Johnson, and Whatman failed, and eight were down for 239. Thompson, the- professional, who had been batting briskly, was then joined by Leatham, and the score was carried to 263 when stumps were drawn, the farmer being 40 and the latter 8. Five bowlers were tried, and all got wickets, but none of them bowled up to their best. But still they cannot be said to have done badly. The weather interfered with the attendance, which was about 1500.
