We are informed that the improvements effected to some parts, notably the Elbow, have given the public much greater security m travelling the road. Mrs Nairn, the wife of Dr Nairn, of Blenheim, has accepted £250 and expenses m settlenjent of the action brought by 'her m the Scotch Courts against the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd., m which she claimed £3000 damages m respect of the injuries sustained by her last May when disembarking from the Wakanui to go ashore at Teneriffe. Tlie system of advertising the colony, which has been inaugurated by the Tourist and the Industries and Commerce Departments, appear to be bearing fruit m many strange quarters. Mr Donne has received a letter from 'Cola-pan Mindoro, Philippine Islands, asking as to the prospects m New Zealand for a man desirous of settling down and fanning m a small way. Speaking of the fund for the testimonial to Mr Glass, the .secretary to the Poverty Hay Provincial Executive stated at the meeting to-day thai it bud been poorly supported m the district. Mr W. A. Hood thought it was only through negligence, as most people were <[uite prepared to spend their shilling. The secretary said there had been no negligence or his part. Of the £4 16s collected Tiniroto liad subscribed £3. It was resolved to inform the branches that th? fund would close shortly, and request them to complete their subscriptions. English cholera, which has claimed several victims lately m the. North Lslnnri, has made its appearance m Christ church, several residents having been attacked. The disease, which is epidemic, does n'ol , appear to be so virulent there as m Auckland, but the symptoms are violent , enough to keep those attacked m bed for several days. Influenza is also making its reappearance.
