The City Council has decided to approach the fire insurance companies for a reduction in premiums, in. view of the up-to-date plant provided to cope with fires.
The Council also resolved to enforce the by-law against expectoration on footpaths. Mr Hector N. Simson announces himself a candidate for Aucklnad City as an independent Liberal. The Tramway Company submits to the Council that it cannot enforce the penalties for delay in completion of the electric tram service, contending that the delays have been unavoidable through no fault of the company, which was- provided for in the deed of delegation. The Council has referred the qu-estion to its Legal Committee for a report. WELLINGTON, this day.
Richard Dalhousie, who pleaded guilty to forgery before, the Magistrate, was admitted to six months' probation, a,nd ordered to pay three guineas costs of prosecution. STRATFORD, this day. Mr Donne, of the Tourist Departmen.t, accompanied by Mr McKenzie, Oommisvsioner of Crown Lands, visited Mt. Egmont- Reserves. The committee visit, both the Stratford and Dowson Falls houses. A deputation from this district was told by the, Minister that the StratfordWhangamomona, Railway would be. completed to Whangamomona ' within two years. AUCKLAND, this day. Harrry Weston, bootmaker, blew Ink brains out this morning with a. revolver in the bedroom of his house. He was a married man with two 'children. NELSON, this day. Three boys who absconded from the Stoke Industrial School and stole and killed a. sheep belonging to Geo. Norgate, Poor Man's Valley, were ordered by Mr Robinson, S.M., to-day, .to receive six strokes with the birch-rod for absconding and six strokes for theft, and two other boys six strokes each. A charge against one other was dismissed.
