The Manawatu Fanner is very severe on the practices of a certain tohunga at Otaki over the death of Kerelii Tomo. It alleges that at the tangi the only daughter of the deceased chief, in the presence of all the tribe, rose from the Bide of her dead father and rushed upon the leading tohuuga, striking him with a Maori battleaxe, which had been lying on the coffin. The Farmer adds:—"lt is time that the practices of these tohungas \ffere looked into by the Government. The number of deaths that have taken place under their hands on this coast is a very serious matter."
