THE LATEST FROM CHEVIOT.

Messages received to-day from Cheviot state :— After another night of shakes and

tremors, daylight found Cheviot more demoruiiscd tkan ever, but otherwise much m the same condition as last night. All the long night haggard women have kept watch lrom gardens and back yards, ami every succeeding shock added to their fears. Several were severe. Rumbling noises preceded them, and now nervous people are so shattered that every loud shout startles them almost out of their wits. There is a general exodus of women and children. Undoubtedly McKenzie is not a desirable place of residence at present. Shocks are continual, and one is occurring as I write. The tired telegraph operator and myself several times yesterday had to bolt for the open air ] while despatching messages. ■ News con- ' tinues to come m from the surrounding districts ot devastation and loss. Offers of help are coming m fast from all quarters. The settlers, however, are not destitute, although a few unfortunate '. folk without capital are ruined. This is .the case with several small traders and , one or two lodging-house keepers, but the ■ rest of the community, when it has reestablished its equilibrium, will not be so badly off. Most of the people possess capital to renew destroyed buildings and replace the damaged stock. 1 p.m. — No shocks have been felt here since 10 o'olock this morning, and it is fervently hoped that the seismic disturbances have gone altogether. Steady rain is falling. Another moderate shock of quake was felt m Christchurch about ten minutes past nine this morning.
