CRICKET.

WEST END v. UNITED. Cricketers had a fine afternoon on Saturday, and the fixture between City and West End resulted m ;i pleasant game. A late start was made, the match not commencing till nearly 3 o'clock. The United men were the worst offenders. The West End won the honor of placing a full team m the field m all their matches so far. The other districts have been lax m. this respect, City and United sometimes taking the field with eight men. As the season progresses, and new men come out, this state of affairs will doubtless be remedied. West End ■went to the wickets first, commencing with. Dodd and Hakawai. Porter and Gibson were entrusted with the United bowling. Hawakai soon fell a victim to a splendid ball from Porter. Hodge joined Vincent, and the captain soon had six to his credit. Porter was sending m some fast ones, and an extra good one found Hodge's stumps. Vincent was next, and he and Dodd made a good stand, both playing steady cricket, and pasting Gibson's loose ones m great style. A change m the trundlers had the desired effect, and Lyttelton secured Vincent's wicket after a well-played 13. Of the other batsmen, MeConnell seconded Dodd's efforts well, knocking up a hard-hit 16. Dodd was caught for a total of 25. This batsman played a careful innings, punishing any balls off the wicket. Charles and Cumming gave the United trundlers a bit of leatherhunting for the last wicket, bringing the total score to 92. Charles was not out with 11 opposite his name. With 93 to make to win, the suburban men were still sanguine of victory. McCredie and Gibson were the first pair of batsmen. The "stoomper" fell a victim to Hood early .m the game, and United's Blackham retired with 3 to his credit. Lyttelton joined his captain, and the two carried the score to 38 before Charles bowled Lyttelton for 11. Porter was next, but lost Gibson, who fell to Hood after putting up 21. Porter aud Gouldsmith carried the score to 79 before a separation was effected. The United have a good recruit m Gouldsmith, (Who is a first-class bat, and also a fair bowler. When stumps were drawn, United had eight wickets down for 111. The rate of scoring was fast, 203 runs being knocked up m three hours. Porter, Gouldsmith, and Lyttelton trundled best for United. Hodge and Hood divided honors m the bowßnff department for the losers. The fielding on both, sides was not up to top standard, several easy catches being dropped. The wicket played fairly well. Messrs. Charles Evans and W. File officiated as umpires. Following are the scores: — WEST END. Dodd, c Hill, b Lyttelton 25 Hakawai, b Porter 0 Hodge, b Porter ... 6 Vincent, b Lyttelton ...
