THE CONFIDENCE TRICK.

Recently a young man who followed the occupation' of -a miner, wishing to return to New Zealand,' was engaged purchasing hia ticket at a, well-know,n Sydney office, when a stranger ran against him m the usual "accidental" way, and casually remarked that he too "was proceeding to the island colony where he owned a mine.' Conversation : followed, and the "mine owner" opined that he had "bought some horses over there" and wanted a ; man to look after them on the voyage to New Zealand. A -further meeting was arranged, and the ''mine.pwner" introduced ''a friend who > ; wna'' arranging for ' the purchase of some machinery at Pyrmont." •The trio went' to Pyrmont, • but the vendor of the machinery "not being m," a stroll through Wentworth Park was agreed to. Strange to relate, a, neatlydressed individual (No; 4) passed, and <"acccidently" dropped some valuables, which were promptly returned to biin. Compliments were showered from No. 4 vpon the trio, and No. 4 proved also to be nicely spoken, and "had independent means," and "was shortly to be married." Bur, "he had recently lost- £SO at a game," of which he had at last "solved the secand "was now going to win thouv sardj- " ':.> For 1 their honesty, "he would teach them how the trick- was . done." They agreed, and the miner lost £50 m the operation. Constable Souter then came on the scene, and the^miner explained his loss, but the nicely-spoken man had gone with the £50; The constable arrested one of the alleged conspnators, who is now under remand, but where the £50 has gone to has nob been derii.itely revealed.— Sydney Daily Telegraph. -
