The annual meeting of the Tolago Bay Jockey Club -is a fixture that is growing m importance, as witness the larger en--tries and greater patronage each year. In both respects the present meeting holds a record. The Club, who offered the substantial sum of £210 m prizes, received very gratifying encouragement from horse-owners when the nominations closed, the list being a long one, and Mr Bennett's handicaps were found to be so satisfactory that after the scratchings there were still large Kelds left m. Consequently, the sport to-day was of the best, and the speculators, larger m number than at any previous gathering on the Coast, were treated to some firstclass contests, with sevferal exciting finishes. The Club's pretty course, some two miles from the township, was the rendezvous of people from all parts of the East Coast, including many visitors from town. . A large number of Natives were present. The weather was not very bright, but it was not altogether unfavorable, and the cold southerly breeze did not chill the ardor of the sportsmen present. The Club were very generally congratulated upon the . completeness of their arrangements. Everything was as well arranged as at the best metropolitan meeting, and credit for this fact is m no small degree due to the energetic secretary, Mr Holder, who, after many seasons' conduct of racing at Tolago, has the machinery' of the meeting m excellent order, and who those that had dealings with him found to be so full of courtesy and eagerness to oblige. The other offices -were equally well performed. Mr Sinclair, the popular host of the Tolago Bay Hotel, provided an excellent luncheon, and catered- for the liquid requirements of Ms patrons m a first-class manner. Messrs. Barry and Hogan had the running of the totalisator, and, needless to say, their work was/ as usual, characterised with celerity and accuracy. Altogether the meeting was a thorough success, and racing folk . will count it as one of the most enjoyable gatherings of the year.
