THE RAILWAY WORKS.

Tenders are now invited by the Public Works office for the erection of the- Gisborne Railway Station. This is to be a building of the ordinary small' station type, its dimensions are to be as follows : — Parcels and ticket office 32x19, public lobby 18x19, ladies waiting room 15x19, station master's room 12x19, district manager's office 12x19, guard's room 9x19, lamp room 9x19. Provision has also been made for a ladies lavatory and conveniences. The station will be-erect-ed on the north side of the line, entrance to which will be gained from Peel street. The platform will be 20 by about 300 feet. Nearly^ opposite the station a goods shed is to" be erected, the proposed dimensions being 60x30 feet. The main entrance to this will be by Grey street. Up to Saturday the rails had been completed to Mr Tombleson's at Makauri, and further work m this direction is being rapidly pushed on. The number of hands employed on the construction of the line is sixty, anQ now that the bridge timber ; the want of which has greatly retarded the progress of the work, is coming to hand, it is anticipated the work m all departments will be proceeded with more expeditiously. The locomotive which came to hand some weeks ago has been erected, and awaits completion by the arrival of springs and sundries which needed replacing. These are expected to arrive from Newmarket during the next fortnight. The engine will be put into commission to carry ballast from Kaiteratohi, where borings nave revealed the fact that good gravel to a. depth of 26ft can be obtained from the Waipaoa river.
