iPex Press Associataion.) WELLINGTON, this day. That portion of the Imperial representative corps who: yesterday visited Masterton were to-day entertained at a garden party at the jHutt. The function was attended by 1000 people. The men spent a very enjoyable afternoon. The W anganui section returned to the city this evening. They met with a cordial greeting. at the various towns en route. Their welcome at Palmerston was very whole-hearted. This evening the officers were entertained by the Minis--17 SPEECH BY MR SEDDOIS. WELLINGTON, this day. At the dinner to the Imperial . officers the Premier presided, and m proposing the combined forces of the Empire said the time was ripe for the colony to ask the Imperial authorities to strengthen the Australian Squadron. His Administration had considered the question, and after discussing the matter with the statesmen of Australia, the conclusion arrived at was that representation must be made m that direction. New Zealand would have to lead the way m this, as m other projects. If extra contributions were required, the colony was willing to pay them. He repeated his former state-, ment that he did not approve of - a standing army, but would strengthen the volunteer system. Colonel Wyndham, replying, heartily thanked New Zealandei> for their hearty reception, and paid nign tribute to the Maoris, whom, he said, had been gaUan|t and honorable enemies, but were now good friends. The troops leave for Napier this afternoon. (Spe-sial to "Herald.") NAPIER.this day. The weather promises to be magnificent for the reception of the Imperial troops to-morrow. Already a large number of visitors have arrived to view the procession. The town is being gaily decorated, and. the event gives promise of being one of the most important m the history of Napier. A general holiday will be observed, even the telegraph office closing from midday to 5 p.m.
