LORD ROBERTS' GENEROUS OFFER.
FRENCH CAPTURES 540 PRISONERS. London. Feb. 26. Lord Roberta' offer of a safe conduct to the women in Cronje's laager was refused. Medical aid was also rejected unless they were allowed to retain the doctors. The bombardment of the laager, which was intermittent on Thursday, was resumed in strength ou Friday. The British are gradually closing in on all sides. General French expelled reinforcements from a fortified kopje to the eastward, the position affording splendid defenca against the relieving column. He captured 540 prisoners, including several hundred mounted men who escaped from Cronje's laager during the night. He also captured numbers of sheep and cattle. Captured deserters declare that Cronje is willing to surrender, but is overborne in his desire by the young Transvaalere. Twenty additional Canadians were wounded in the advance attack on Cronje.
