The Hospital Trustees meet this eveuing at the hospital. The new Minister of Mines is a, cousin of Mr H. McGowan, of Gisborne. A meeting of the Committee of the Horticultural Society will be held at the Herald Office to-morrow evening. The Borough Council meet this evening, when the Mayoral installation will take place, Mr Townley taking the civic chair for hia tenth term. Messrs Williams and Kettle bold a clearing sale of- furniture and effects to-morrow at the residence of the late Mrs Johnstons, Makaraka. The s.s. Mararoa arrived at 1 p.m. today from Auckland, after a smart passage of 2U hours. She takes a large number of excursioniata South to-night. The local wool sales are being held at Messrs Wyllieand Mason's auction mart this afternoon. There is a large attendance, including several outside buyers. Competition was keen and satisfactory prices obtained. Unfortunately for Gisborne, the San Francisco mail boat was 8-sveral hours late in arriviog at Auckland yesterday, and failed to connect with either of the two steamers that were coming south. The Star of Australia left at 3.15 p m. and the Mararoa at 3.30 p.m., and the Alameda did not arrive until 5. 15. Had the latter been in sight at half-past three the Union ateamer would doubtless have been detained for the mails. The Gisborne portion of the mails will como to hand via Napier by the Elingamite on Saturday morning. A meeting of the newly-formed branch of the New Zealand Natives Association was held at the Wesley Hall last evening. There was a large attendance, upwards of forty members being present, and the Rev. Herbert Williams was voted to the chair. Considerable discussion took place regarding the subscription to the Association, several of those present being of opinion that an entrance fee should be charged in addition to the yearly subscription, It was finally decided the membership fee should be 2s 6d per annum, without any initiation fee. There was keen competition for the various offices, the following being elected : President, Rev. H. Williams ; Vice-Presidents, Hia Lordship the Bishop of Waiapu, and Messrs W. Webb and J. Macfarlane ; secretary, Mr Cecil Lewis ; treasurer, Mr W, Gaudin ; committee, Dr Williams, and Messrs A. F. Keunedy, P. Maher, A. Rees, G. K. Pasley, A. T. Webb, and E. A. Rees; auditor, Mr M. Foster. The rules of the Auckland Association were adopted with slight alterations. It waa decided to hold another meeting to-morrow night week. Turanga Church Services. — Sunday next.
