BRAVE HIGHLANDERS.
It is interesting to note that the Highlanders whose ranks were decimated on Monday 'were only a few weeks ago presented to Her Majesty and received their new colors. Colonel Downman, whose name is mentioned in the enclosed clipping from the 'limes of September 22nd, wad amongst the killed :— The Gordon Highlanders, who are at present route-marching through Aberdeenshire, reached Brackley House, Ballater, on Saturday. As the men were approaching the camping ground, they were honored with a visit from the Queen and Princess Henry of Battouburg. Although it waß nearly 6 o'clock in the evening and the weather was very chilly, the Royal party were driving in an open carriage, Sir Allan McKenzie, of Glenmulck, who is entertaining the Highlanders, was summoned to the Royal presence, and Her Majesty made various enquiries aB to the progress of the march and the health of the men. Colonel Downman, in command of the Gordons, was presented to Her Majesty, who was graciously pleased to offer a cordial welcome to the soldiers of the Deeside Highlands. The Queen on Tuesday morning i reviewed the First Battalion of Gordon Highlanders in the barrack square, Ballater. Efforts were made to keep the fact of the review quiet, but it apparently became known, for as the time fixed for the ceremony approached large crowds gathered in the square. The battalion, along with the guard of honor at present stationed at Ballater, were drawn up in the square, arid received Her Majesty with a Royal salute. The Queen was accompanied by Priuceas Henry of Batten burg. The Highlanders marched past the Royal carriage, the large crowd of people cheering lustily. — The Prince of Wales presented new colors to the First Battalion of Gordon Highlanders on Monday at Brackley House, Ballater. . The Gordons, after being inspected by Her Majesty, on Wednesday left Ballater for ■ Tarland, where they stayed for the night, \ being received by Sir John Clark, Deputy a Lord Lieutenant for Aberdeenshire.
