. A BRILLIANT FUNCTION. (Electric Telofsraph— Copyrleht-Ualted Prew Association.) London. Deo. 16. The South Australian dinner was a brilliant function. The Agents-General, Marquis of Tweeddale.auid two hundred and forty leading colonists, bankers, and merchants were present. Tho Duke of Cambridge presided. He said he did so because he always had the greatest admiration for the colonies. He was delighted to see the uuxicty and desire in every colony to join in the honorable, dangerous, and painful duties of war. Such I action would produce an enormous effect on foreigners, who were jealous of our | united Empire. I Dr Cockburn, responding to the toast of " The Colonies," said Federation was being effected, not from outside compulsion but from internal attractions. They were never so close to the motherland as now. Lord Kelvin proposed "The Empire." Lord Halsbury, replying, said the present spectacle of all the children preserving the mother's supremacy was unparalleled in the world's history. Lord Wolaeley was Absent through pressure of business.
