[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, This day. ] Mr Thomas Mackenzie addressed a full meeting of members of the Wellington Underwriters AssociatKip yesterday afternoon on the question of dealing with the liaudliug and insurance of frozen meat. ' He went very fully into his subject, iescribiug the abuses which had crept intu the frozen meat trade, and suggesting remedies for their removal. He thought the Insurance Association should be given an opportunity of grappling with the difficulties, but failing unity of action on the part of the Home peoplu with the j colony, he considered it imperative in the t interests of the industry that something 1 Bhould be done, and reluctant as he was to j 3ee Government interference with private ] enterprise, he felt the gravity of the posi- j tion would warrant it. The tone of the ( meeting was distinctly favorable to the ( general views expressed by Mr McKenzie j and as to the necessity for remedial measures being adopted. A hearty vote ( of thanks was accorded Mr McKenzie for ( his kindness in addressing the meeting and for the information he had imparted. Mr McKqnzie leaves for Dunedin on Saturday evening. Mr J. Embling, of Christchurch, has accepted the position of general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, in succession to Mr Tegetmeir. Captain Russell, who has been seriously ill ever since Parliament rose, was slightly better yesterday, but he is still in a very i weak condition. Further evidence was taken in the Pareora enquiry yesterday afternoon. The Court will give its decision on Monday. The Defence Department has received a telegram from Mr John Tindall, who holds the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery, stating he is willing to go on active service in the Transvaal. He has offered to find his own horse and pay his own passage. The Department is unable to accept his services or those of any other suitable man who may volunteer. In recognition of his long and valuable services, Sir James Prendergast, ex-Chief Justice, has had the title of " Honorable " conferred on him by Her Majesty. Mr Cadman, in reply to a requisition signed by 2582 of the electors of Ohinemuii, has definitely decided not to stand again. The German Emperor has struck a number of medals from the metal of captured guns to commemorate the birthday of his grandfather, Emperor William. These mcdnlß are now being distributed to veterans residing in the colony by the German consuls. AUCKLAND, This day. A house at Waitekauri has been burnt down. It was occupied by a man who was got out with difficulty. The house hod just been rented by Mr Dawn, who moved his furniture into the building and lost everything. There was no insurance on the house or furniture. Sir Maurice O'Rourkc is out for the Mamikau electorate. Martin Lestrange and Win. McGiuly, on a charge of breaking and entering, were committed for trial. Consideration of the dispute in the saddlerj trade has been resumed by the Conciliation Board. The masters and the representatives of tho Union came to an agreement on several "of the clauses in the demands of the men, and evidence was taken on several points.
