How to Reduce a Big Nose
The surgeon 1 ; ha\e succeeded in accomplishing many remarkably rhinoplastiioperations : but in thn Berliner Klinische Wochensehrifl Dr .Joseph describes a rliinopliiblic opeialion pciiormcd by him, nut as is usually the case, for the purpose of restoring a missing or mutilated nose, but in order to reduce the proportions of a prcteniatiirally developed nose. A country gentleman possessed an olfactory organ of dimensions so enormous as to arouse the hilarity of his neighbors, and he was thcrefoie so much mortilied that be became almost melancholy, and appealed to Dr Joseph to deliver him from his alUiction. The superfluous skin and cartilages were accordingly removed by four incisions, which formed two angles, with the vertex iii the median line of the nose ; then the unduly prominent nasal hones were reduced with 'the chisel, and finally the bridge of the nose was shortened by excising a wedge-:-h:iped portion of bone. Sutures woie the i applied, the wound healed by lust in.cnlion, and thepaf'ent is now in high spirits, a rompaiison of photographs afl'ording ample cvMencc of the improvement which lias been brought ahoul in his appearance A similar case was under the care of Professor llobert Weir, of New York, ami is described in the New York Medical Journal, I^o2, p. 4.">2 ; but as a rule it is not the reduction of a nose, but a reparation of that organ, damaged or deficient, which is required.
