POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB.

TO-MORROW'S RACES.

3 Tun Poverty Bay Turf Club's summer , meeting commences to-morrow, and will j be continued on Friday, find judging from. t present appearances the gathering should , be a very successful one. The fields, with . the exception of the Hurdles, have filled well, and the races are bound to be well , contested. The weather promises to be j fine, and this should induce the public to " roi: up in large numbers. The withdrawal ] of Tallinn from the Tnranga Stakes has , caused some disappointment, as she is j looked upon as being the Carbine of Poverty Bay, and the sporting public ' dearly love; to see a good horse racing. ! Her impost (lOst 41b) looks a good weight, hub when we consider the quality of cattle ! she was asked to meet, the weight allotted , by Mr Drivers cannot be said to bo j excessive, the distance being only ] J miles. , In looking over the weights carried by j winners in some of the best races, we find , that in 1.569 in the Sydney Cup, 2 miles, j The Bard carried lOst 81b", and won the race in 3min 4()scc The Assyrian, with , lOst 71b, won the Hnbart Cup, and Dura- , tion won it with lOst Sib up. In 1870 Knottinch won the Canterbury J.C. Handi '. cap with 10-6, and the Melbourne Cup was won by Archer 10 -2 and Carbine lO'o. It is therefore to be hoped that we shall see ! the popular luiia colors on the course on \ the second day. Baring, Nightingale, and . C'oolgardie arrived this morning by the To Anau. The course and grounds are iti ; fir.st-class older. The Club have made i arrangements for a band, which has been | playing at the Auckland Exhibition, for | the meeting, bo lovers of good music will 1 have no cause of complaint on that score The first race starts at half-past twelve, 1 whilst the Turanga Stakes, the chief race 1 of the day, is set down for half-past two.
