Wimx the Mayor of Melbourne (Councillor M'Knelwrn) was at Colombo lust month, the Times of Ceylon took advantage of his visit to inteniow him. The reporter selected for the duty was a young Cingalese, of good address and education. Mr M'Eachavn (-aid his visit was of a purely private character — he was merely accompanying his wife half-way on her voyage to Kngland, and consequently desired that he should not lie. regarded in hit representative capacity. The young Cingalese bowed bis acquiescence, and after a few minutes' conversation on things in general left. On the following morning the Mayor of Melbourne, on coming down to breakfast at the Gnlle F.ice Hotel, where lie w-ts staying, had a copy of the Times of Ceylon placed on the labie in front of him, -»ilh his curry. Only one item interested him. ft began modestly with "The Mayor of Melbourne in Colombo : A Chat with Hi* Worship,'' and for the space of nearly a column he found liim u clf wandering oil' into dissertations on such subjects as "Our (Ceylon) Harbor Works anil (Iraving Dock,"' "The Colombo Tramways — good plant, but roads too narrow," "The Sanitation of Colombo — its nightsoil system an abomination," "Plague Precautions," and "The Coolgardie Exhibition — its prospects." The only one thing that the interviewer had not made the visitor any was that he intended "writing a book about Ceylon when he returned to Victoria."
