LONDON SCANDAL.

« LORD MAYOR'S CORRUPTION.

(R.M.S. Alameda, at Auckland.) London, Dec. 28. Proceedings in the libel suit brought by Alderman Sir Joseph Savory, M.P., have brought out matters damaging to the character of the City Corporation. The suit arose through the charges by a London paper that Sir Joseph Savory had financed, an electric light company to his own advantage. The jury found for the paper. The evidence showed a glaring misuse by Sir Joseph Savory of his position while he was Lord Mayor. He arranged contracts and promoted electric light companies, pocketing large sums with every fresh deal. The original company, which had a capital of £50,000, developed into an existing company which could not be bought out under £3,000,000. Sir Joseph Savory's brother, sisters, and other relatives shared the profits. Sir J. Savory is held in high repute for his piety, and was known to City men as "Holy Joe." The press, in their comments on the case, advise him to resign his aldermanship.
