A WARSHIP'S MANY ENGINES.

♦ Very few people are aware what an immense number of engines are carried by a big warship. She has — Two engines to propel her. Two engines to start the ' propelling engines. Two engines to give her machinery a turn every day while she lies in harbor — an operation that would otherwise employ every man aboard for hours. One steering engine. Seventeen engines for pumping in water, converting it into fresh water, feeding it to the boilers, evaporating it, and pumping out all of it that leaks down to the bottom of the ship. Four engines for working the ventilating fans that blow air to every part of the ship. Eight engines for getting up a forced draught for the furnaces. Four engines for supplying torpedoes with compressed air and ejecting them from the ship. Five dynamo engines for supplying electric light. Four fire engines for use. in case of fire. Four engines for hoisting ashes and cinders from the stokehold. Two engines for loading the ship with coal. , One engine for weighing the anchors and warping the ship to her moorings. One workshop engine for supplying power for shearing, turning, planing, moulding, etc. Four engines for hoisting on boaul torpedoes, steam and sailing boats, and other heavy things. Eight hydraulic engines for raising and lowering the guns, turning the turrets, and lifting the shells. Then there are a number of large steamboats on board, which have among them four hydraulic engines, three fee.l engines, two fan engines, three crane-hoist engines, aud one circulating engine. Finally, there are also 011 board some thirty torpedo boats, each of which has its own engines. So that the total number of engines carried by a big warship amounts to the immense number of 128. — Scrap?.
