During the half year just passed thu railway revenue shows an increase of ±71.000 over the cortesponding half year of 1597. (Received Jan. 17, 9.40 a.m.) Jan. 17.— In reply to enquiries, the Secretary of Agriculture has received information that the wheat harvest of Cape Colony is below the average, and a considerable .shortage will require to be made up. (Received Jan. 17, 9.50 a.m.) ADELAIDE, Jan. 17. A shoemaker named Cavins at Price stabbed his wife several times, then attacked her with a tire-iron, and afterwards cut his own throat. The woman will probably lecover. The man is in a serious state. The couple lived unhappily together. LAUNCESTON, Jan. 17. The protest against the Austrians was the outcome of a cablegram stating that work could be found for several hundred men on railway, construction, and that the Anstrinns who 'were refused admission to New Zealand were coming to Tasmania. Local labor is superabundant.
