ACCIDENT ON A STEAMER.

(Electric Telegraph-Copyright— United Press Association.) Received Jan. 14, 9.15 a.m.) Sydney, Jan. 14. A quantity of sulphuric acid took fire on the steamer Tynan on the voyage from Melbourne to Sydney. There was somo panic amongst the passengers. The stuff was tin-own overboard. The vessel was only slightly damaged. [Sulphuric acid does not catch fire, but if it escapes the fumes resemble smoke. It will be rememberer} that in the accident •' on the s.s. Manapouri betweeu Auckland and Gisborne many years ago, when a jar that, had broken loose in the hold broke and gave forth fumes, it was mistaken for fire, and under that assumption the sailors bravely struggled to extinguish it. Pouring water on the acid only raised more fumes, and, whereas had the acid been left alone no damage would have resulted, the chief officer and several members of the crew lost their lives in the effort. The men died ashore, and were buried in Gisborne cemetery.]
