■ ' ♦ [Pbr I'bess Association.] WELLINGTON. To-day. A big slip has occurred at Makotuku bridge, in the Seventy Mile Busli, where a large number of men are nt work. There was n. heavy slip at the same place at the end of the winter, and some 2000 yards of rilling from a cutting were deposited in the gap, but now this lias been swept clean out of place, a good portion going into the I Makotuku stream, which is dammed in consequence. At the time of the slip tunnelling operations fordraining purposes were in progress. So far as can be learned the new bridge has not suffered, but trains going over the old embankment have lo reduce their speed considerably. AUCKLAND, To-day. The residence of Mr Sutton. at Whawhau valley, near Whangarei township, has been burned down. The family were away at the time. The furniture was insured in the South British for £100. The house was owned by Mr A. T. Potter and insured in the Commercial Union for £150. On the passage of the barque Peru from New York, H. West, a native of Christchurch, fell overboard and was drowned Mr Brigham, secretary to the Harbor Board, cables that he has arranged with the Admiralty for a subsidy of £4244 per annum, for 40 years' interest and sinking fund on v loan of £32,000.
