The British postal authorities are arranging for the employment of wireless telegraphy between the lightship stationed on the Goodwin Sands and the Kentish coast. The official returns show there were 275,000 exemptions from vaccination in Great Britain during the year 1898. Count Karolyi's (Austrian Ambassador's attache) motive for suicide was ill-health. Jan. 10. — At a meeting of the AndBounty League, Sir H. Tozer, of Queensland, seconded a motion expressing disappointment at the failure of the Brussels conference to secure abolition of bounties on sugar. He declared that Great Britain's inaction on that occasion created an uupleaaant impression, and augmented the separatist movement in Queensland. The Khedive has expressed to Sir H. Grenfell his admiration and gratitude to Baron Cromer for his recent expressions. The Hon. W. P. Reevea, New Zealand Airent-General, does nob suspect any design by Germany on Vavau. The Standard states Tonga is within the British sphere. Lieutenant Wark, whose death sentence for murder was recently reprieved, has had the sentence reduced to three years' imprisonment. The Italian cruiser Etna conveys Italian exhibits to the Coplgatdie mining exhibition. The German Government will send exhibits illustrating methods for the prevention of mining accidents. The total Wool arrivals Up to date for the next series of sales are 242,582 bales, of which 73,000 have been forwarded direct to the manufacturing centres.
