SAMOAN KINGSHIP.
A SERIOUS SITUATION. PROPOSALS TO MURDER THE CHIEF JUSTICE. (Electric Tolcgraph-Copyriirht— United Press Association.) Sydnky, Jan. 6. News from Samoa to the 24th December states that the Supreme Court is considering the claims of Mataafa, Malietoa, and Tanu to the kingship. Mataafa's case closed the day before the mail left. During the week a chief of Mataafa's made threats to assassinate the Chief Justice, and counsel for Malietoa took an oath before his family to do ho. Malieloa's people placed an armed guard round the Chief Justice's property. The Consuls held a meeting, and decided to give joint protection to the Chief Justice, bul afterwards the German Consul backed down. The English and American Consuls issued a proclamation that any assault on the Chief Justice would be taken as an insult to their respective flags. Strained relations still exist between the German Consul on the one hand and the English and American Consuls and the Chief Justice on the other hand. So far the popular vote favors Malietoa. The supporters of Mataafa have been made to admit that they nominated him against the express wish of the provinces.
