UAWA ATHLETIC CLUB.
The above club's annual sports were held i on the Tolago Bay racecourse on Monday, January 2nd. The weather was fine, but , warm, and there was a, large attendance. i The events were all well contested, and ; the entries above the average. The Hack Race was voted the best race ever seen on i the course, Lady Albert winning by a bare : length, with the eight others in a bunch • behind her. The officials discharged their duties in an able and energetic manner, i adding much to the success of the meeting. ■ The following are the results : — Maiden • Race, 120 yards : A. Trent 1, Rawhiti i 2 j 3 entries. Boys' Handicap (under i 16), 150 yds: Rua 1, Apata 2; 9 entries. : Uawa Handicap, 100 yds : J. Wilson (6yds) . 1, A. Trent (3yds) and Hautanga (syds) -, dead heat for second place. Ture Mulligan • (scr), P. Hewitson (scr) J. McNeil (3yds), • W. McNeil (4yds), G. Coleman (7yds), and : Paora (10yds) also started. Hack Race: • Mr G. Dixon's Lady Albert 1, Mr S. Martin's Bill 2 ; 9 started. A great race ; won by a bare length. Throwing the ■ Cricket Ball: P. Hewitson (87yds) 1, T. Wilson 2. Pony Race, H hands 2ins and : under: Mr A. Fraser's Romiromi 1, Mr J. R. Murphy's Barbara 2; 11 started. Uawa Handicap, 220vds : J. McNeil (6yds) 1, S. Mulligan (scr) 2, W. McNeil (Byds) 3. P. Hewitson (scr), J. Wilson (3yds), A. Trent (3yds), Hautauga (Gyrls), G. Coleman (12yds), and Paora (18yds) also [ ran. Cigar Race : A. Rangiuia 1 ; 10 ■ entries. Open Handicap : J. H. McNeil (3yds) 1. J. Wilson (3yds) 2 ; 0 entries. i Leaping Match : Mr J. H. McNeil's Sandy . 1, Mr A. Zachariah's Charley 2. Great ■ interest was taken in this event, there ■ being no less than 22 competitors. The i decision of the judge, Mr John Holmes, . w.is well received. Uawa Handicap (final i event), 440 yds: S. Lett (4 rings) 2. This event is becoming more popular every year, no less i that 30 tilters pulling out for this event.
