GISBORNE RACING CLUB'S AUTUMN ■ MEETING.

FIRST DAY.

After We .went to press yesterday the Publicans' • Purse arid the Second Hack Handicap were run off. In the Publican's Purse. Unique was prime favorite with investors, whilst Moetai was not far behind in the .public's estimation. A good race resulted in a close finish, Unique winning by a neck. In the Second Hack Handicap King Wai was most in favor with investors, though Pani was fancied by not a few. Despite two or three big commissions on Pani. King Wai started first favorite. The race was, perhaps, one of the most interesting of yesterday's meeting. The favorite got off hrst and kept the lead until at the quarter-mile post Pani got ahead, and a neck and neck contest resulted in Pani winning easily by a neck. The owner of King Wai entered- a protest against Pani's win on the ground of inconsistent running. Tlio Stewards met, but postponed consideration of the protest till 11 o'clock this morning. Entering the straight Unique and Jlootai were neck and. neck, but before reaching tlio stand Unique had shot ahead, and despite the effort^ of Moctai's rider, passed the post a neck ahead. At the quarter-mile post Pani secured the lead, but' wub close pressed by King Wfii. Entering the straight Pani was coming easily along, whilst King Wai's rider was putting forth every effort ' Pani passed ' the judge's box first, and won by a neck. A protest was entered by the owner of King Wai.
