Lawn Tennis.
On Saturday afternoon, on the Gisborne Lawn Tennis Club's courts, Kaiti, the first match of the season -took place between teams representing Te Ran Native Coliege and the Tennis Club. The latter were very much handicapped through not being able to put its best team ou the courts, as Messrs 'A. W. Rees and G. Staite were unable to play. From the commencement of the -match it was evident that the' College team had been well trained and would make the club play all it knew to save defeat. In the first round the College won easily tM r o of the matches and the club the third after a hord .fight. In the second round the College again won two matches, but in the third the club gained two as against one by the College. Below are the scores : — Ist round. Rees ana Buttler f Totals 60 41 43 as 9 7 As it was decided to play the by games, this gave the College 112 games against 8U for the Club, a majority of 26 games. A large number of people' watched the play •with keen interest, and the win by the College was very popular. Mrs Mann kindly supplied afternoon tea, which was much enjoyed by everybody. Messrs Fuller, Sim, Bouillon, and Watson undertook the arduous duties of umpires with satisfaction.
