The Bishops of Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Wellington, and a large number of other leading clerics, took part in the ceremony, which was a most impressive one. The loan represents the balauce of unconverted 4 per cent, stock. : Nov. 2. — At the enquiry into the explosion ' in a powder factory at ITootseray Mr Hake, Inspector of Explosives, stated that lie found particles of grit and iron in some blank cartridges. He declared such powder was liable to explode at a reduced pressure. SYDNEY, Nov. 1. With reference to the alleged deterioration of Australian horses sent to India, Mr Bruce, the Chief Inspector of Stock, considers racing as now conducted lias a good deal to answer for. If horses were compelled to carry decent weights and be at least 15 hands high, and two-year-old racing done away with, it would be possible to obtain useful horses. So far as racing was concerned, it was not needed to improve the breed. Pony racing had a still worse effect in lowering the standard of useful horses. The Governor and party propose to make a tour of New Zealand, leaving by the next trip of the s.s. Moana. Fred Shepherd shot his wife dead at Port Stewart, and then committed suicide. . PERTH, Nov. 2. Luke Snow, aged seven, the son of the proprietor of a shooting gallery, shot his father at Cue. The boy, thinking his father was ill-treating his mother, picked up a gallery rifle and shot him in the breast. He died in a few minutes. Two good reefs, carrying over soz to the ton, have been discovered at Newcastle, 40 miles from Perth, which is the nearest point to the capital where gold has yet been obtained.
